According to a study conducted for the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC), one-fifth of 8-year-old 3rd graders already own their own cell phones.

There is not a set age that has been deemed “the right age” for children to own phones. But there are a lot of things to take into perspective before purchasing your child a phone, such as the uses for the cell phone.

Ruth Peters, a child psychologist in Clearwater, Florida suggested that parents avoid buying children younger than 13 a phone with a camera and Internet access. “If they don’t have access to it, it’s just cleaner,” she said.

So, when is the right time?

Before buying your child a cellphone and throwing them into the world of social media, take some things into consideration such as how responsible is your child and can they handle keeping up with a physical phone as well as abiding by the restrictions set in place to keep them out of texting scandals and social media disputes.
